Fox Gymnastics is a local gymnastics club for 120 children aged 5 and upwards. The club provides a safe and friendly atmosphere for gymnasts to develop their skills and practice in local competitions. The gymnastics club are inclusive of all children and abilities and support those in foster care as well as with concentration issues including ADHD.
Unfortunately, due to lack of available funding, the equipment at the club had deteriorated, having not been replaced in over 20 years (or thereabouts). In addition, the club were at coaching capacity, unable to take newcomers and inspire more children to be active and promote healthy living and exercise.
The Youth Aspirations Fund (YAF) funded new equipment including a vault run up, vault board and cover to protect the equipment whilst in storage. Furthermore the grant funded two teenage students to become coaches with full training and DBS checks and two member parents to train to become ‘Welfare Officers’ for the club.
Helen Smith from Fox Gymnastics, said: “We now have two fully qualified Club Welfare Officers which are required as mandatory by British Gymnastics in the running of a ClubMark organisation. This provides parents and gymnasts with the opportunity to direct problems to others not involved with the running of the club.”
The equipment is now, once again, safe to use and provides gymnasts with a smooth and even run up. The vault itself is stronger and sturdier and students feel more safe using it. The overall impact of this has resulted in children enjoying practice more and now have the proper equipment to be inspired and develop their full potential.
It has also allowed two teenage gymnasts to train to teach, inspiring younger users to follow in their footsteps. The addition of these two new coaches means that the group’s waiting list has reduced and more children are able to use the service and practice gymnastics locally. In turn, the aspirations of the two new teenage coaches have been raised and they are both enjoying the new challenge of coaching. They coaches are developing lots of important skills that will assist them throughout their lives.
One of the newly qualified coaches said: “I really enjoy coaching and this coaching course has provided me with the tools and confidence to coach!”
