Over 1,450 youngsters aged 16-18 recently benefited from an event organised by The Sixth Form College Farnborough to raise aspirations and encourage progression in young people.
The TEA Fair was organised by the Careers team, to help students make informed decisions about their futures. The event was supported by local companies, through attendance and grants to host the event.
Laura Wakefield from the College explained the difference the grant made, ‘’The Youth Aspirations Fund (YAF) enabled the College to expand the event promoting it to a host of employers and providers. The College was able to provide internal marketing resources to engage the students and allocate funds to facilitate the event. Thanks to the grant contribution the event hosted 55 exhibitors making it its biggest ever TEA Fair.’’
Exhibitors at the TEA Fair came from a wide range of organisations including, AON, Aviator Hotel, Barclays, Capgemini, Enterprise Rent-a-car, Fashion Retail Academy, Frimley Park Hospital, Fujitsu, Gillette, PWC, RAF and Visa, as well as representatives from other Colleges, to name a few. Exhibitors spent the day talking to youngsters about their career opportunities and potential progression paths and options. Feedback was extremely positive from students, staff and exhibitors, with 87% of the exhibitors rating student engagement as good or excellent.
Alongside the advice, guidance and expertise given on the day, a number of young people, directly arranged work experience placements and some have even secured apprenticeship employment ready for when they finish their College courses in the summer. Making a lifetime decision is difficult and at times confusing. This event helped to quash myths whilst providing industry insight into careers. Alongside this the enhanced employer engagement has meant that the College is able to access further industry insight and attract key speakers to support curriculum areas and upcoming College events such as the Moving on Day event in the summer.
AS student Clare Hayes, who attended the Fair, found it "an exceedingly useful event. There were a huge variety of employers there and a vast amount of resources to help me in making an informed decision, about what options are open to me and what I can do with my future”.
