The Sixth Form College Farnborough help out at Westival

In July 2017, a group of students from the Sixth Form College Farnborough went and volunteered alongside industry professionals to help transform a local arts venue, The West End Centre, into a summer festival heaven!

The West End Centre is an entertainment venue and arts centre located in Aldershot. The centre hosts classes, workshops, art exhibitions, music performances, stand-up comedy, and small-scale and intimate theatre.

The team decided to apply for a Give & Get Day to help them secure financial aid, and more importantly, student volunteers. The West End Centre decided to team up with CMPP Partner, The Sixth Form College Farnborough, in order to tap into a base of student volunteers, and potentially aspiring Events Managers. The project recruited 20 volunteers and secured £500 worth of funding to transfer their little indoor venue to a full blown Glastonbury-esk grotto!

The student volunteers worked alongside industry professionals and worked hard to lay grass, create flower arrangements, set up staging and much more! Student volunteers, whilst working on the transformation were able to network and chat to experts and find out more about their desired career path.

Westival ran from the 21st July - 23rd July and welcomed over 70 acts across the three days, including music, spoken word and dancers.

Sophie Winkworth, student volunteer, commented: “I decided to volunteer at the West End Centre because I love festivals and music concerts so thought it would be the perfect opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes. What I enjoyed most was seeing everything come together into their mini Glastonbury style grotto and working with the people there. The people running the Centre were so friendly and it was both an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I also now know how to set up a stage which I'm not sure when I would need to know in life but could prove helpful nevertheless!”
